June 18th Update: This restriction was upgraded to a Mandatory Outdoor Water Use Restriction due to further stream flow reductions.

The Topsfield Water Department has instituted a Voluntary Outdoor Water Restriction effective June 7, 2018. The restriction is required because the average daily streamflow for the Ipswich River, as recorded at the United States Geological Survey's Ipswich Gauge Station, has fallen below 70 cubic feet per second for three consecutive days.

All residents and businesses are asked to curtail nonessential outdoor water between the hours of 9 AM to 5 PM. Essential outdoor water use includes those uses that have a health or safety impact, are required by regulation or are needed to meet the core functions of a business or organization.

In addition to limiting outdoor use the Water Department encourages the following conservation measures:

• Run your dishwasher and clothes washer only when full.
• Fix any leaks around the house.
• Install water efficient toilets, faucets and showerheads.
• Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator, rather than running the faucet.
• Consider replacing water intensive lawns with low water demand plants and grasses. The Water Department has several guide books that are available to residents.

Please call the Water Department at (978) 887-1517 if you have any questions.

Manganese Advisory

The Water Department issued a manganese advisory on November 1, 2013.  Monthly test results are available our water quality site.

The Perkins Row well exceeded MassDEP's limit of 0.3 milligrams per Liter during the summer of 2016.  Both water sources are now below State manganese limit.  The advisory will remain in place until the treatment plant is built and in operation.

Water Treatment Plant Information

A Special Town Meeting held on June 20, 2017 approved $10.4 million for the construction of a water treatment facility.  Construction is underway and we expect the plant to open in early 2019.  Click here for more information.
