Water Department Projects

Active Projects:

The following projects are being worked on at this time.

  • Meter Replacement Project

We are in the final year of our Meter Replacement Project and have approximately 500 meters left to replace. Please call (978) 887-1517 to make an appointment if we have not changed your meter yet.

  • Sequestrant Treatment:

After conducting a water quality study and analyzing the effectiveness of several treatment chemicals a sequestrant has been selected for use in controlling the amount of managanese that collects in the water mains. The treatment system is currently being designed and plans are being drawn for submission to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection for approval. Installation of the treatment system is expected to be completed this winter.

Planned Projects:

The following projects are in various stages of the planning process.

  • Supply Well Replacement:

The tubular vacuum wellfields are aging and need to be replaced with a series of graval packed wells with submersible pumps. The proposed system eliminates the use of a vacuum to withdraw the water from the ground and eliminates a possible source of contamination. Design work is scheduled for FY2009 and constructio in FY2010.

  • Manganese Filtration:

We will monitor the manganese levels in the new water supply wells and determine if a filtration system is required to remove the manganese from the water.

  • Alternative Disinfection:

Once we determine whether a filtration process is required or not we can investigate alternative disinfection processes such as ultraviolet light, ozone and other options instead of relying on chlorine.
